Animal feed pellet mill knowledge
I. Definition
An animal feed pellet mill is a mechanical device that processes pulverized powdered feed ingredients (such as corn, soybean meal, straw, grass meal, fish meal, etc.) into cylindrical, block, or other regularly shaped pellets through mechanical compression and extrusion. The resulting pelleted feed has advantages such as high density, good flowability, ease of storage and transportation, and reduced feed waste.
II. Core Working Principle
The working principle of a feed pellet mill is mainly based on compression molding:
1. Feeding: Uniformly mixed powdered raw materials fall into the pelleting chamber through a feeding screw or by gravity.
2. Compression and Extrusion: The core components are the ring die and pressure rollers. The ring die is a cylindrical steel mold with multiple rows of uniformly spaced small holes, containing 2-3 freely rotating pressure rollers. Driven by a motor, the ring die (or pressure rollers) rotates at high speed, and the raw material is strongly compressed between the ring die and the pressure rollers.
3. Forming and Cutting: The compressed raw material is extruded from the small holes of the ring die under high pressure, forming a compact cylindrical strip. An adjustable cutter is installed outside the ring die to cut the extruded strip into pellets of the required length.
4. Cooling and Screening: Freshly extruded pellets are hot (up to 70-90℃), moist, and soft. They need to be cooled and dehumidified by a cooler to harden them, and then screened by a vibrating screen to remove fine powder, resulting in finished pellet feed.
III. Main Types
Based on the structure of the core die (ring die) and the machine design, they are mainly divided into two categories:
Based on the structure of the core die (ring die) and the machine design, they are mainly divided into two categories:
Ring Die Pellet Mill | The ring die rotates, and the pressure roller rotates under friction, forcing the raw material through the die holes between the ring die and the pressure roller. Mainstream model. High output, high forming pressure, good pellet hardness, and strong durability. Can be equipped with ring dies of different diameters (Φ2-12mm) to suit various animals. Suitable for medium to large-scale farms, specialized feed processing plants, and commercial pellet feed production.
Flat Die Pellet Mill | A horizontally placed flat die is fixed or rotated, and the pressure roller rolls on it, pressing the raw material vertically downwards through the die holes. Relatively simple in structure, low in cost, easy to maintain, and relatively low in power consumption. It adapts well to coarse fibrous raw materials (such as straw). Suitable for small-scale livestock farmers, family farms, laboratories, and processing lignin biomass fuel.
Furthermore, it can be categorized by power source:
* Electric pellet mill: Most commonly used, stable and efficient.
* Diesel pellet mill: Suitable for areas without a stable power supply.
* Tractor-driven (PTO) pellet mill: Driven by the power take-off shaft of a tractor, suitable for large farms.
